Humility Without Pretending
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Philippians 2:3-4 KJV
Humility is not saying that you have no ability when God has given you gifts. It is refusing to make your importance the center of every room. Paul connects lowliness of mind with genuine concern for other people.
You can be confident in a task and still listen to someone else's idea. You can succeed without making another person's disappointment into a joke. You can admit that a group decision should consider more than your preference.
Christ's humility gives this instruction its deepest example in the verses that follow. He did not need to prove His worth by demanding attention. Let your confidence rest in Him, then use your abilities to serve. Make space for the quieter person whose contribution might otherwise be missed.
Keep the passage in context
Paul calls believers to humility and concern for others as he teaches unity in the church. The following verses direct attention to Christ's humility. This instruction is not a command to regard another person's sin as right.
