Loyalty After the Applause
And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.
2 Samuel 9:7 KJV
Promises are easiest to praise when they are new. David's care for Mephibosheth shows loyalty continuing after Jonathan's death. The commitment mattered even when Jonathan was no longer present to thank him.
Second Samuel 9 gives the historical account of that kindness. Mephibosheth received real provision and a place at David's table. We should respect the passage's setting rather than force every detail into an imagined spiritual code.
Consider the commitments you make when affection or enthusiasm is strong. Follow-through matters later too. Remember the person who still needs help after the public interest has moved elsewhere. Faithful care does not require an audience. Sometimes it is seen most clearly when there is little attention left to gain and a real responsibility remains.
Keep the passage in context
David shows kindness to Mephibosheth for Jonathan's sake, restoring land and providing a place at his table. The account concerns covenant loyalty. It can illustrate kindness without making every detail a direct picture of salvation.
