Shame Is Not a Payment

After doing wrong, you may feel that staying miserable proves you are taking sin seriously. Sorrow can accompany repentance, but it cannot pay for sin. Christ's sacrifice does what self-punishment cannot.

John calls us to confession, not denial and not an endless attempt to earn cleansing. Name the wrong, turn from it, and rest in God's faithfulness. If you have harmed someone, accept the responsibility to address that harm. Consequences may remain after forgiveness.

The passage is not permission to sin casually because forgiveness is available. It invites truthful fellowship with the God who is light. Stop protecting the wrong, and stop pretending your misery can improve the finished work of Jesus Christ. Follow honest confession with the next obedient step.
