The Cross Is Still the Message
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 1:18 KJV
An old message can seem less interesting than a new idea with attractive language. Yet the gospel does not become outdated because people have heard it for centuries. Our need as sinners has not changed, and neither has the sufficiency of Christ.
Jesus died for our sins and rose again. Salvation comes through faith in Him, not through becoming impressive, religious, or unusually sincere. The cross confronts human pride because it declares that we needed a rescue we could not provide.
Do not be ashamed of a plain gospel. Learn it clearly enough to explain without hiding it behind vague words about improvement. Christian growth matters, but better habits are not the same thing as being reconciled to God through Christ.
Some people will dismiss the message. Respond with patience rather than treating every disagreement as a contest. Your confidence belongs in the truth and power of God, not in your ability to make the cross fashionable. Keep living in a way that agrees with the grace you proclaim. The message that saved you is still the message other people need to hear.
Keep the passage in context
Paul contrasts the world's view of the cross with its saving significance to believers. God's power is revealed through the message of Christ crucified.
