You Are Responsible for Your Reply

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Romans 12:18 KJV

Someone else's rudeness can become our favorite excuse. We rehearse what they said until our own harsh response begins to seem unavoidable. Scripture gives us a clearer place to stand.

Paul tells believers to live peaceably as much as it lies in them. Your response belongs to you. You may need to correct a lie, report harassment, or leave an unsafe conversation. Those choices can be made without borrowing the other person's cruelty.

Pause before replying. Remove the sentence written only to wound. State the actual issue instead of attacking the person's whole character. Some people will remain unreasonable, and their response is not proof that you failed. Faithfulness does not include controlling everybody else. It includes bringing your own conduct under the Lord's authority, seeking help where needed, and refusing to let another person's sin become permission for your own.

Put the passage into practice

You cannot guarantee another person's willingness to live peacefully. You can examine your own conduct, correct unfair words, and avoid actions designed to inflame the dispute. The limits in this verse matter. Pursuing peace should never be used to require silence about abuse, threats, or serious wrongdoing. Involve responsible adults and appropriate help. Christian conduct takes peace seriously while also recognising the need for truth, accountability, and protection when another person refuses to act peaceably.

Keep the passage in context

Paul calls believers to pursue peace as far as their own conduct allows. The wording recognizes that one person cannot control every response or guarantee reconciliation.
