The Card with a Smudge
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7 KJV

Freddie made a card for his grandfather. He drew a garden shed, three flowers, and a very large sun. While coloring the sky, he brushed his sleeve across the wet blue paint. A smudge spread over one corner.
His sister's card had straight letters and neat little birds. Freddie looked from hers to his and wanted to begin again. There was no time before they left for the visit. He folded his card with the smudge hidden inside.
Grandfather opened the cards after tea. He thanked Freddie's sister for her birds, then looked carefully at the garden shed. Freddie explained that it was the place where they had planted seeds together. He also showed Grandfather the small watering can he had drawn by the door.
Grandfather placed both cards on the shelf. He said Freddie's picture reminded him of a happy afternoon. Freddie pointed out the smudge, but Grandfather was still looking at the tiny watering can.
Later Freddie helped him bring the empty cups to the kitchen. He discovered that a card did not have to look perfect to carry real care.
God told Samuel that He looks on the heart. Neat work is good, and learning to do our best matters. Still, an attractive outside cannot take the place of a heart that loves what is right. Freddie's smudged card had helped him think about the difference between looking impressive and showing someone honest love.
For the grown-up reading along
When Samuel sees Jesse's sons, God teaches him that outward appearance is not the measure of a person's heart. The Lord's judgment reaches beyond what people can see.
