The Cupboard Light

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Psalm 119:105 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

The light in the garden shed had stopped working. Grace wanted to find the string for her kite, but the cupboard was dark. She could feel several boxes on the shelf and hear something small rolling inside one of them.

Dad brought a torch and stood beside her. When he shone it into the cupboard, Grace saw that the string was behind a tin of nails. She was glad she had not pulled the tin down by mistake.

The light showed more than the thing she wanted. It also showed a loose shelf and a puddle near the door. Dad moved the sharp tools out of reach and told Grace where to stand while he made the shelf safe.

Later they sat at the kitchen table and untangled the kite string. Dad read the verse about God's Word being a lamp. He explained that the Bible helps us see the right way to live. Sometimes it shows a promise that gives courage. Sometimes it shows a wrong choice we need to stop making.

Grace remembered the tin of nails. She had wanted the torch to help her find string, but it had also helped her avoid trouble. She was thankful for both kinds of help.

God's Word does not become less kind when it corrects us. Its truth helps us walk wisely. Listening to Scripture means welcoming the light even when it shows something we had not planned to notice.
