An Apology With a Next Step
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Proverbs 28:13 KJV
It is possible to say sorry while planning to repeat the same wrong. Proverbs 28:13 will not let us separate honest confession from turning away. The person who covers sin protects it; the person who confesses and forsakes it stops defending it.
If you copied homework, an honest response includes telling the truth and doing your own work. If you spread a rumor, correct it with the people who heard you. You cannot always undo the damage, but you can stop adding to it.
Mercy is not a prize for a perfect apology. God is merciful, and we come to Him without excuses. Let your next step agree with the words you have spoken.
Keep the passage in context
The proverb contrasts concealing sin with confessing and forsaking it. Mercy is not purchased by pretending to improve. Honest repentance stops defending the wrong and turns from it toward God.
