The Empty Space on the Poster

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

1 Corinthians 12:18 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

The class poster was supposed to show how a village worked. Grace wanted to draw the houses because she liked choosing roof colors. Three other children wanted that job too. Nobody volunteered to make the labels or organize the information.

The teacher asked the group to list all the work before choosing roles. There were roads to draw, facts to check, labels to write, and a key to explain the symbols. Grace thought the labels sounded dull, but she was the neatest writer in the group.

She agreed to make them while the others began the pictures. After a few minutes she noticed that the village had no school. There were plenty of attractive houses, but several things the project needed were missing. Grace used the information list to help the group decide what still belonged on the page.

When the labels were ready, she arranged them so they did not cover the drawings. One boy had made beautiful trees but had forgotten which road led to the hospital. Grace's key helped connect the parts of the village into something people could understand.

On display day, visitors spent time reading the facts beside the pictures. Grace's writing was part of the whole poster, even though it did not look like a brightly colored house. Her classmates thanked her for keeping the information clear.

The passage from Corinthians concerns Christ's church, which is much more than a school project. Its picture helps us understand why different kinds of service matter. God does not give every believer the same task, and the visible jobs cannot do everything by themselves.

Grace learned to value useful work that was not her first choice. She did not have to pretend she disliked drawing. She could enjoy that ability while also using the skill the group needed most. A finished poster required more than four people competing to color the same roofs. A healthy church likewise grows stronger when its members honor and serve one another in the places God gives them.

Keep the passage in context

Paul describes the church as one body with members placed by God. Different gifts and responsibilities serve the whole body rather than competing for the same visible role.
