The Jailer Who Heard the Gospel

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Acts 16:31 KJV

Paul and Silas were imprisoned at Philippi after being beaten. At midnight they prayed and sang praises to God, and the prisoners heard them. Their suffering had not stopped their worship or made the Lord unworthy of trust.

A great earthquake shook the prison. The doors opened, and everyone's bands were loosed. The jailer awoke and feared that the prisoners had escaped. Paul called to him and told him they were all there, preventing him from harming himself in his fear.

The jailer came trembling and brought Paul and Silas out. He wanted to know what he must do to be saved. Their answer directed him to the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation was not presented as a reward for guarding the prison well or for repairing enough of his past. He needed to believe on the Saviour.

The account continues with Paul and Silas speaking the Word of the Lord to him and to all in his house. This detail matters. The reference to his household does not mean one person's faith automatically saves everyone related to him. The people in the house heard the message too. Each person needs Christ personally.

The jailer cared for their wounds, and he and his household were baptized. He brought them into his house, set food before them, and rejoiced in believing God with his household. The care and obedience that followed were not a payment buying salvation. They belonged after the response of faith.

The gospel remains centered on the same Lord Jesus. He died for our sins and rose again. We cannot earn acceptance with God through good conduct, family membership, or a religious ceremony. We are saved by grace through faith in Christ.

A prison night became the setting in which a frightened man heard the truth he needed most. The power of the account lies in God's work and the message about His Son, not in a promise that every Christian's hardship will end with an earthquake. Even in suffering, Paul and Silas had a Saviour worth proclaiming.

Keep the passage in context

Paul and Silas tell the Philippian jailer to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. They then speak the Word of the Lord to him and everyone in his house; the household is not saved by someone else's faith.
