The Package That Came Back

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

Proverbs 16:9 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

The class prepared a package of handmade bookmarks for a partner school. Oliver volunteered to write the address because his handwriting was neat. He copied it from an old notice and carefully decorated the corner of the box.

Several days later, the package came back. The school had moved, and the notice Oliver used was out of date. He felt embarrassed when he saw the return label. He had pictured the children opening the bookmarks already.

The teacher checked the current address and helped the class arrange another delivery. Oliver apologized for not confirming the details. He wanted to explain that his writing had been perfect, but he realized that a beautifully written wrong address was still the wrong address.

While they repacked the box, another child suggested adding a note about the class and the books they enjoyed. The delay gave them time to make the package more personal. Oliver helped write the note, then checked the new address with the teacher before placing it on the box.

When the partner school replied, the children were delighted to receive a letter in return. Oliver was glad the package finally arrived. He also understood that the useful addition did not make his original mistake wise or prove that he knew exactly why every delay happened.

Proverbs teaches us to plan while acknowledging that the Lord directs our steps. We should use the information and care available to us. When a plan changes, we can learn, correct a mistake, and continue without claiming control over every result.

Oliver had wanted the neat label to guarantee a smooth delivery. The returned package exposed something his careful handwriting had not solved. God's providence is wiser than our view, but trust in Him should never become an excuse for neglecting ordinary responsibility. Check the address, do the work honestly, and remain willing to respond when the route changes. A disappointed plan can still leave room for a faithful next step, even when we cannot explain every part of the journey that brought the box back to our hands.

Keep the passage in context

Proverbs recognizes human planning while affirming the Lord's direction of our steps. Wise plans remain subject to His providence rather than claims of complete control.
