The Pencil Marks on the Doorframe
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Psalm 90:12 KJV
This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.
The kitchen doorframe held pencil marks for every year of Jacob's life. He liked standing beneath the newest one and measuring how much he had grown. His little sister's marks were lower, and his father's old mark was far above both.
One Saturday, Granddad came to visit with a box of family photographs. Jacob planned to join him after finishing a game. He completed one level, then began another. Each time Mother called, he said he would come in a minute.
By the time Jacob reached the kitchen, Granddad was putting the pictures away. He needed to leave before the traffic grew busy. Jacob felt disappointed and asked him to stay longer, but the afternoon had already been spent.
Before leaving, Granddad gave Jacob one photograph of the garden as it looked many years earlier. They arranged another visit and wrote the day on the calendar. Jacob placed the photograph beside his game console so he would remember why that visit mattered.
On the next visit, he put the controller away before Granddad arrived. They looked through the pictures and talked about people Jacob had never met. Some stories were funny, and some were sad. Jacob learned more about his family in that quiet hour than he had expected.
Later, he stood beneath the doorframe again. The pencil marks showed that he was growing, but they could not tell him how wisely he had used the days between them. Becoming taller happened while time passed. Becoming thoughtful required choices within that time.
Psalm 90 directs us toward wisdom in the days God gives. We should enjoy recreation without letting it quietly swallow every other opportunity. Jacob did not need to throw away his games. He needed to recognize that a living person at the kitchen table deserved more than the minutes left over after an endless next level. Time cannot always be retrieved, but a missed afternoon can teach us to value the next one before it has gone.
Keep the passage in context
Moses asks for wisdom in numbering our days in light of life's brevity and God's eternity. Time should be used thoughtfully rather than treated as something we possess without limit.
