The Safety Poster Nobody Followed

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

James 1:22 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

Ben's poster won a place beside the bicycle shed. It showed a helmet, bright clothing, and a rider stopping at the gate before joining the road. Ben had drawn the wheels carefully and written the safety rules in bold letters.

After school, he unlocked his bicycle and slipped his helmet over the handlebar. He was only riding a short distance to meet his father. Wearing it would flatten his hair, and several friends were watching near the gate.

As he rolled forward, a younger child pointed to the poster and recognized him as the artist. Ben looked up at his own drawing. The rider on the page was doing exactly what Ben had decided to skip. Explaining the rule had been easier than following it when he felt self-conscious.

He stopped beside the fence and put on the helmet properly. One friend made a quick joke about his poster coming to life. Ben smiled and checked the strap instead of removing it again. At the gate, he waited and looked carefully before moving on with his father.

That evening he told Dad about the moment. He had liked being praised for knowing the right things. He had been less eager to let those things govern what he actually did. Dad helped him see that knowledge becomes useful when it reaches a real choice.

The next week Ben helped a younger child adjust a loose helmet strap. He could give the instruction without feeling that his own conduct was arguing against it. He was still learning, but he had taken a step beyond the poster.

James teaches us to be doers of God's Word. Memorizing a verse and explaining its meaning are good beginnings. We should also welcome the moment when that truth asks something of us. Ben's safety drawing concerned ordinary riding, but it exposed a habit that can reach much farther. A person may know what Scripture says about honesty, kindness, or obedience and still need to stop at the gate, make the right choice, and live what he has learned.

Keep the passage in context

James calls believers to do the Word rather than hear it only. Knowing and explaining a truth should lead to an obedient response.
