The Second Invitation
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
Romans 12:16 KJV
This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.
The class planned a small celebration after finishing its history project. Children could choose partners for the table games. Ava hoped the most popular girl would invite her, so she kept a chair empty and watched the doorway.
Meanwhile, a quieter classmate named Ruth asked whether they could play together. Ava said she was waiting for someone without explaining that no invitation had actually been made. Ruth moved away and found an empty place near the bookshelves.
When the popular girl arrived, she sat with two friends at another table. Ava felt foolish guarding a chair nobody had requested. She looked toward Ruth, who was reading the game instructions by herself. Ava realized that she had treated a real invitation as less valuable than an imagined chance to seem important.
She went to Ruth and apologized for putting her off. She admitted that she had been waiting for a different group instead of welcoming the person already beside her. Ruth agreed to play, though Ava could see that her earlier response had hurt.
They chose a game neither knew well and learned it together. Ruth noticed patterns quickly and explained her ideas without making Ava feel slow. After a few rounds, they invited another child to join them. The table became lively for reasons Ava had not planned.
At home, Ava read Paul's words about pride and lowliness. She understood that being friendly only when a friendship improved her standing was not sincere love. People deserved respect before she discovered whether they were popular, talented, or able to help her fit into a group.
Ava's new friendship did not make every social choice simple. It did help her notice when she was measuring people by the attention they might bring. The Lord calls His people to a humbler way. A warm invitation from a quiet classmate is not a lesser gift because the room is watching someone else. Learning to receive it with gratitude helped Ava stop overlooking the person who had already made room for her.
Keep the passage in context
Paul calls believers to live in harmony, reject proud ambitions, and be willing to associate with the lowly. Christian love does not rank people by how useful they are to our reputation.
