The Seed Packet Instructions

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Matthew 13:23 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

A packet of wildflower seeds came with the library's spring project. Amelia liked the picture on the front and immediately imagined a bright patch beside the fence. She sprinkled several seeds onto a hard corner of the garden and hurried back inside.

Her brother read the instructions and prepared a small bed with help from their father. He loosened the soil, placed the seeds properly, and watered gently. Amelia thought his careful work made a simple project take much too long.

Weeks later, green shoots appeared in his bed. Amelia's corner held a few scattered stems and plenty of weeds. She had enjoyed the picture of flowers without giving much attention to what the seeds needed. Father helped her begin again in a more suitable place.

At Sunday class, the teacher read Jesus' explanation of the good ground. Amelia remembered the garden, but the teacher made clear that Jesus was speaking about hearing and receiving God's Word. A Bible lesson should not remain like a pretty picture on a packet while our actual choices stay untouched.

That week Amelia heard a lesson about truthful speech. When she broke a small household rule, she was tempted to give a misleading explanation. She remembered the passage and told the truth. The honest response did not remove the consequence, but it showed that the instruction had reached beyond her ears.

In the garden, the second planting still required time. Amelia cared for it with more attention and watched the first flowers open later in the season. She did not use the flowers as proof that she was a better Christian than anyone else. They helped her remember a lesson about taking truth seriously.

God's Word should be heard with a willing heart. Understanding leads toward a response that bears fruit in life. We need the Lord's grace, and we should not resist the clear obedience His Word calls for. Amelia learned to look beyond the picture she enjoyed and attend to the living result. The lesson belonged in her words and actions as surely as the seeds belonged in prepared soil.

Keep the passage in context

Jesus explains that the good ground represents the person who hears the Word, understands it, and bears fruit. The parable concerns our response to God's truth rather than gardening skill alone.
