The Stars beyond the Streetlight

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

Psalm 19:1 KJV

This is an original fictional illustration, not a historical report or an added Bible event.

The astronomy evening began later than Lucy wanted. Clouds covered the sky, and the streetlight near the hall made the few visible stars difficult to see. She had expected bright planets and a long look through the telescope.

The leader gathered the group around a table of charts while they waited. Lucy listened halfheartedly. Printed circles did not seem like much of an adventure. She wished the clouds would move simply because they had planned the event weeks before.

After a while, the leader noticed a clearer patch toward the edge of the field. The group moved there with the adults, keeping safely together. Away from the streetlight, Lucy could see many more stars. Some looked steady, while others seemed to flicker in the cold air.

The leader explained distances that were hard for Lucy to imagine. She asked careful questions about what the telescope could show and listened as the answers made the small points of light more interesting. The sky had not become greater because she learned its names. Her attention had grown.

On the way home, Father read the opening of Psalm 19 with her. The heavens declared God's glory. Lucy understood that learning about creation did not have to push the Creator from her thoughts. The order and greatness she observed gave her reason to admire His work.

They continued reading the psalm's words about God's law. Father explained that the stars could not tell her the whole gospel or teach every duty of her life. Scripture spoke with an authority the sky did not replace. Both wonder and careful Bible reading belonged in a thankful heart.

Lucy drew a small chart of the stars she had seen and wrote the reference beneath it. The evening had included waiting, disappointment, instruction, and a surprising view. She was glad she had stayed long enough to look beyond the nearest light. Sometimes our hurry keeps us from noticing what has been above us all along. The world God made deserves thoughtful attention, and the glory it displays belongs to Him.

Keep the passage in context

Psalm 19 declares that the heavens display God's glory and handiwork. Creation gives reason to honor its Maker, while the psalm also directs attention to the clearer instruction of His Word.
