The Volunteer Badge
Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:8-10 KJV

The volunteer badge made Chloe feel important. She had helped at three community events, and the leader added a small star each time she completed her assigned work. Chloe kept the badge pinned to a board beside her bed.
One evening her brother asked why people needed to be saved. Chloe began listing the good things a person should do. She mentioned helping neighbors, telling the truth, and behaving well at church. Her father listened and asked her to read Ephesians 2 with him before continuing the explanation.
The passage gave a different order from the one Chloe had described. Salvation came by grace through faith, not from works. Good works followed as the purpose for which believers were created in Christ Jesus. Her list contained useful actions, but she had placed them where only the Saviour's finished work belonged.
Father explained that Jesus died for our sins and rose again. Chloe could not present a badge, a record of kindness, or a religious routine as payment for forgiveness. She needed personal faith in Christ, who alone could save her. The gospel was good news about what He had done, not a challenge to collect enough stars.
The next volunteer morning, Chloe helped sort clean supplies into boxes. She still wanted to do the work carefully. Learning that service could not save her did not make service worthless. It helped her understand that obedience and generosity were responses to God's grace rather than an attempt to make Him owe her acceptance.
When the leader thanked her, Chloe received the kind words without turning them into a spiritual score. Later she returned to her brother and corrected what she had said about salvation. She explained the passage in its proper order and admitted that her first answer had been wrong.
A good deed can bless someone and still be unable to remove our sin. We should keep that difference clear, especially when teaching others. Chloe's badge belonged on the board as a reminder of useful service. It did not belong in the place of Christ as the reason a sinner can be made right with God.
Keep the passage in context
Paul teaches that salvation is God's gift through faith, not the result of works. Believers are then created in Christ Jesus for good works, which follow grace rather than purchase it.
