A Gift Neither Spouse Can Earn

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV

Marriage can develop a quiet habit of keeping accounts. One person remembers the tasks completed, the sacrifices made, and the ways the other has fallen short. That habit becomes even more dangerous when it enters our understanding of salvation.

God does not save us because our good conduct has finally outweighed our sin. Salvation is His gift through faith in Jesus Christ. The cross was necessary because neither spouse could make themselves righteous enough to be accepted.

Keep that gospel plain in your home. Religious upbringing, marriage to a believer, and useful service cannot take the place of personal faith in the Saviour. Each person must come to Him.

Grace also gives believers a humble starting point for loving one another. We have received what we could not earn. That does not remove the need for fairness, responsibility, or repentance within marriage. It removes the ground for spiritual superiority. Serve gratefully, confess honestly, and stop treating the person beside you as though you arrived at God's mercy through a better personal record. Both of you need a gift that only Christ can provide.

Keep the passage in context

Paul declares salvation to be God's gift by grace through faith, apart from works. No person can boast of earning acceptance before God.
