Do Not Quarrel on the Way Home

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way.

Genesis 45:24 KJV

Joseph's brothers had plenty of history to argue about. Years of wrongdoing, secrecy, fear, and blame stood behind the journey home. His warning addressed the danger of turning the road into another place for quarrelling.

Couples can recognize a smaller version of that temptation after a difficult family visit or conversation. The trip home becomes a review of every comment, with each spouse defending relatives or collecting evidence against them.

Take time to settle before discussing what happened. Separate the facts from assumptions, and address the matters that genuinely require a response. A long argument in a car rarely gives either person the room needed to think carefully.

Joseph's kindness did not erase the truth of the past. It offered a different direction for the next part of the journey. Let grace influence the way you travel through shared history. There may be real issues to resolve, but they can be handled with patience and appropriate timing. You do not have to turn every mile toward home into another opportunity to keep the old conflict moving.

Keep the passage in context
