Keep the Same Respect in Every Setting

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

Romans 12:16 KJV

A person's manner can change according to who is watching. Courtesy appears quickly before someone influential, while the spouse standing nearby receives impatience or a dismissive answer.

Christian respect should not depend upon status. The person who shares your home deserves thoughtful treatment in public and private. So does the person serving you, cleaning the room, or unable to offer anything useful in return.

Pay attention to how you speak about your spouse before others. Avoid the story that earns laughter by making them appear foolish. If a concern requires counsel, tell it accurately to an appropriate person rather than turning it into casual entertainment.

Humility keeps us from arranging relationships by what they can do for our reputation. Christ has shown grace to people who could offer Him no payment. Let that grace produce a consistent manner in you. A marriage is strengthened when the same respect follows both people into every room. Your spouse should not have to wonder which audience will determine how kindly they are treated today.

Keep the passage in context

Paul calls believers to a shared mind, humility, and willingness to associate with those of low estate. Pride and self-importance are incompatible with Christian fellowship.
