Let Christ Set the Manner

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Philippians 2:5 KJV

We can agree that a task needs doing and still disagree sharply about who should bear its inconvenience. Marriage often tests humility at the point where responsibility interrupts a preferred plan.

Christ's condescension is far greater than any household comparison. He is the eternal Son who took the form of a servant and gave Himself for sinners. We do not repeat His saving work. We learn from the humility He displays.

Let that example shape the manner of ordinary service. Help without making your spouse feel indebted for every effort. Speak without treating a request as an insult to your importance. Receive a needed task as an opportunity for faithful care.

Healthy responsibilities still need to be shared fairly, and no spouse is called to accept coercion or harm. Humility is freely offered obedience to Christ, not a tool for controlling someone else. Begin with your own attitude. A marriage grows warmer when both people look to the Saviour before deciding how much consideration they are willing to give. His grace can change the tone of work that has long been handled with resentment.

Keep the passage in context

Paul calls believers to the mind of Christ and then describes the Son's humility in taking the form of a servant and obeying unto death. His unique saving work grounds the call to humble conduct.
