Let Praise Be Particular

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

Proverbs 27:2 KJV

Familiar service can become almost invisible. Meals appear, appointments are remembered, repairs are made, and emotional burdens are carried. Because the work happens regularly, a spouse may stop noticing how much care it requires.

Offer particular thanks. Name the effort you saw and the difference it made. A truthful sentence about a specific act often carries more warmth than a large compliment offered without attention.

Do not use appreciation as a way to arrange more service. Gratitude should honor what has been given, not quietly negotiate the next task. If the workload is unfair, thanking your spouse is only a beginning. Share the responsibility in a practical way.

Likewise, receive appreciation without turning it into a speech about everything else you do. Let a kind acknowledgment remain a gift. The Lord has given marriage many opportunities for ordinary encouragement. Use them before another week passes under the assumption that your spouse already knows. Faithful care deserves to be noticed, and honest praise can help a tired person understand that the labor of love has reached someone who is grateful.

Keep the passage in context

The proverb encourages praise from another rather than self-promotion. Honest recognition has a proper place when it is given truthfully.
