Let Reverence Make the Boundary Clear

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

Proverbs 16:6 KJV

Some boundaries remain uncertain because we keep evaluating them only by whether another person would object. We look for a technical excuse instead of considering what honors the Lord.

The fear of God changes that standard. His holiness matters in the private choice as well as the public one. A husband or wife should not have to negotiate every detail of basic honesty and fidelity as though those duties began with personal preference.

Let Scripture establish the clear moral lines. Discuss practical safeguards with mutual respect, and avoid using spiritual language to impose unreasonable control. Both spouses remain accountable to God for their own conduct.

The proverb's language about mercy and truth should not be turned into a claim that human kindness pays for sin. Forgiveness rests in Christ's atoning work. Those who receive His grace are called to depart from evil. Let reverence make the next step plain. When a choice requires concealment, deception, or betrayal, the wisest response is not a more skillful explanation. It is a willing turn toward the truth God has already given.

Keep the passage in context

The proverb connects departure from evil with the fear of the LORD. Reverence for God gives a stronger reason for obedience than fear of human discovery alone.
