Let the Heart and the Mouth Agree

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Psalm 19:14 KJV

A courteous sentence can still carry contempt in the heart behind it. We may say the expected words while privately rehearsing the judgment that will eventually escape in a sharper moment.

David's concern reaches both speech and meditation. The Lord knows what we are dwelling upon as well as what we finally say. A changed tone has deeper roots than a rehearsed communication technique.

Pay attention to the account you keep telling yourself about your spouse. Correct exaggerations, distinguish facts from assumptions, and refuse the pleasure of rehearsing an insult. Serious concerns should be addressed truthfully with appropriate help, rather than kept alive through private bitterness.

Christ provides grace for the inward need as well as the outward mistake. Bring both before Him honestly. Then choose words that serve truth and care. A respectful mouth and a resentful inner conversation cannot remain comfortably separated forever. Let Scripture shape the thought before it becomes the reply. Marriage benefits when kindness is more than a surface finish placed over a heart that has already decided to despise the person listening.

Keep the passage in context

David desires words and inward meditation acceptable to the LORD, his strength and redeemer. The verse joins outward speech with the thoughts that feed it.
