One Offering Is Sufficient

Written for Bible Journey Plan. Our editorial standards.

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Hebrews 10:14 KJV

When guilt returns, a believer may feel the need to invent another payment. More service, less rest, or repeated self-reproach begins to look like a way to make the wrong sufficiently costly.

Christ's offering is sufficient. Hebrews does not tell us to complete what His sacrifice left unfinished. It directs our confidence toward the Saviour whose work has accomplished what repeated human efforts could not.

Confess sin and take responsibility for its effects. Apologize, make restitution where needed, and change the conduct. Those are responses of obedience, not additional sacrifices that make Christ willing to forgive.

Help your spouse keep that distinction clear. A serious apology need not become endless self-punishment, and grace should not become an excuse for unchanged behavior. The gospel holds forgiveness and transformation together on the foundation of Christ's finished work. A marriage can face failure honestly when both people know where cleansing comes from. Look to the sufficient offering, then carry out the practical responsibilities of repentance with gratitude rather than an attempt to pay a debt the Saviour has already borne.

Keep the passage in context

Hebrews teaches the sufficiency of Christ's one offering and contrasts it with repeated sacrifices. His completed work provides the foundation for the standing of those sanctified through Him.
