A Neglected Need Deserves an Honest Response

A Neglected Need Deserves an Honest Response: an original Acts 6:1-7 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.”

Acts 6:1-7 KJV

Growth did not mean every need was being handled well. The complaint exposed an uneven distribution affecting widows, and the apostles did not dismiss it as a distraction from successful ministry. They acted to improve the care being given.

Read the passage carefully

The response joined practical organization with spiritual priorities. Qualified men were chosen for the responsibility, and the apostles continued their particular work. This was not a claim that practical care mattered less. It was an arrangement intended to make both duties more faithful. A church should not force people to choose between sound teaching and responsible attention to vulnerable members.

When a concern is raised, listen for the facts before defending the system. Determine who is affected, what has been missed, and what change will address the cause rather than provide temporary reassurance. Assign clear responsibility and review whether the solution works. Those selected should have character suited to the trust, not simply availability or social influence. Handling resources and people well is spiritual work.

Carry this truth into the day

Christ's love should make His people willing to correct their arrangements. Acknowledging a problem does not mean the whole ministry has failed. Refusing to hear it may create a deeper failure. If you bring a concern, do so truthfully and through appropriate channels. If you receive one, resist making the speaker the problem simply because the information is uncomfortable. Acts shows that a neglected need can become an opportunity for more faithful shared service. The Lord is honored when His people respond with humility, good judgment, and concrete action that helps those who had been overlooked receive the care they should have been receiving all along.

Why the setting matters

A complaint arises because some widows are being overlooked in the daily distribution. The apostles address the problem through shared responsibility while preserving attention to the Word and prayer.
