At the Time God Had Spoken
At the Time God Had Spoken: an original Genesis 21:1-3 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.”
Genesis 21:1-3 KJV
The opening of Genesis 21 repeats a clear point: the Lord did what He had said. Isaac's birth did not arrive because the years of waiting had finally made Abraham and Sarah naturally capable of accomplishing the promise. God was faithful to His word at the time He had appointed.
Read the passage carefully
Their waiting had included weakness, fear, and wrong decisions. Those failures were real and carried consequences. Yet God's covenant did not depend upon their ability to produce an uninterrupted record of confidence. His faithfulness was the foundation. The birth of Isaac therefore directs attention toward the promise and the Promiser. It is part of the history through which Scripture unfolds God's redemptive purpose, eventually bringing us to the Lord Jesus Christ.
We should be careful with the application. A long wait does not by itself turn a personal desire into a divine promise. People who remain childless should not be told that enough patience will guarantee the same outcome. The proper encouragement is to trust God's revealed word and character while carrying present responsibilities honestly. He has promised eternal life to those who trust Christ, His presence with His people, and a future secured by the risen Saviour. Those promises are strong enough without our adding predictions about circumstances He has not disclosed.
Carry this truth into the day
Receive the account with gratitude for a God who speaks truthfully. If an answer has come, give thanks without claiming that your faith made Him obligated to your timetable. If you are still waiting, bring the burden before Him and seek the help available today. Faithfulness does not require a complete forecast. The Lord kept the word He gave to Abraham and Sarah. Let that history strengthen confidence in the promises He has actually given to you through His Son.
Why the setting matters
Sarah bears Isaac at the appointed time God had specified. The narrative emphasizes that the LORD fulfilled His own word to Abraham and Sarah.
