A difficult morning can make the whole world feel as small as the problem in front of us. The first verse of the Bible opens the window wider. Before our plans, our troubles, and our questions, God was already there.
The beginning belongs to God
Genesis does not begin with a human achievement. It begins with God's action. Heaven and earth exist because He created them. We did not give ourselves life, and the world does not depend on our ability to keep every part of it running. There is humility and relief in remembering that.
A maker understands his work in a way a passing observer cannot. That ordinary comparison has limits, but it helps us recognize why the Creator's word deserves our attention. God is not guessing about the people He made. His authority is rightful, and His knowledge reaches farther than the small part of life we can see.
Put the day in its proper place
The task on your desk still needs doing. The telephone call may still be difficult. Faith in the Creator does not make practical responsibilities disappear. It does help us stop treating the current problem as the largest fact in existence. The Lord who made heaven and earth has not become smaller because our understanding has reached its limit.
Begin the work with a teachable heart. Receive the abilities you have as gifts and use them responsibly. Ask for help where your knowledge is limited. You are a creature under God's care, and there is no shame in living truthfully within that place. Pride asks us to carry what was never ours to control.
Carry this truth into the morning
Notice something today that you did not make and could not sustain by yourself. Let gratitude follow the observation. Then attend to the responsibility God has actually placed in your hands. You can work diligently without acting as though the universe depends on your success. The first verse of Scripture has already told you whose world this is.

Genesis begins with God's creation of heaven and earth. It presents God as the Creator, not as one part of the created order. Our practical response is grounded in His authority and care.
