Christ's Authority Does Not Depend upon Distance

Christ's Authority Does Not Depend upon Distance: an original Matthew 8:5-10 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.”

Matthew 8:5-10 KJV

The centurion understood how authority worked in his own limited sphere. A command could be carried out without his physical presence at every task. He recognized in Jesus a greater authority and did not insist that the Lord follow the arrangement others might have expected.

Read the passage carefully

The man's humility belongs with his confidence. He did not present status as a reason Christ owed him attention. He came on behalf of a suffering servant and trusted the Lord's power. The account gives us a picture of faith directed toward the right Person, not confidence in the strength of one's own believing.

We often make faith depend upon a preferred method. Help must come through a particular person, at a certain time, and in a form we have already decided will count. Such expectations can make us overlook the provision actually given. Bring the need honestly before the Lord while leaving the means under His wisdom. Use responsible opportunities for care and do not assume that ordinary assistance is less worthy because it arrived without spectacle.

Carry this truth into the day

Christ's authority is real even when we cannot see the whole situation. His saving word is dependable, and His promises remain true across distance, weakness, and changing circumstances. This miracle does not guarantee every requested healing, but it does reveal the Saviour as worthy of trust. Let the centurion's concern also move you to notice people under your authority. Their suffering should matter to you as more than an interruption in the work. A position of responsibility becomes more honorable when it is used to seek another person's good and to bring their need before the Lord with genuine care.

Why the setting matters

A centurion asks Jesus to help his servant and expresses confidence that His word is sufficient. Jesus commends the man's faith, which recognizes an authority greater than the command structures he knows.
