Follow Christ into the Work He Gives

Follow Christ into the Work He Gives: an original Matthew 4:18-22 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.”

Matthew 4:18-22 KJV

The men were at work when Jesus called. Their nets and boats belonged to ordinary responsibilities, yet His invitation carried an authority greater than the occupation they knew. They followed Him into a ministry whose full course they could not have understood that day.

Read the passage carefully

We should not use this account to require every Christian to leave employment or family duties. These men received a particular call into Christ's earthly ministry and later apostolic work. All believers are called to follow the Saviour, but that obedience may be expressed through faithful labor in the place already assigned rather than through an abrupt departure from it.

Consider what following Christ requires where you are. Your work may need greater honesty, your schedule may need room for worship and service, or a relationship may require repentance and repair. Be willing to consider a change when wise counsel and clear responsibilities support it, but do not confuse restlessness with divine direction. The Lord's call never excuses abandoning duties His Word tells you to fulfill.

Carry this truth into the day

Discipleship is personal allegiance to Jesus, not admiration for a dramatic story about someone else's decision. Learn His teaching, trust His saving work, and obey in the next matter He has made plain. If He gives an opportunity for a different form of service, prepare faithfully and let mature believers help you assess it. The fishermen's response reminds us that Christ has the right to direct a life. Whether your next step takes you away from familiar work or sends you back to do it more faithfully, the central question remains whose authority you are willing to follow when His Word speaks clearly to the conduct of your day.

Why the setting matters

Jesus calls fishermen to follow Him, and they leave their nets to become His disciples. Their particular calling prepares them for the ministry described throughout the Gospel.
