Give God the Allegiance That Bears His Claim

Give God the Allegiance That Bears His Claim: an original Matthew 22:15-22 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s. When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.”

Matthew 22:15-22 KJV

The question was designed to create trouble regardless of the answer. Jesus asked about the image and inscription on the coin, then gave a response that refused the false choice being forced upon Him. Ordinary civic responsibility did not remove the claim of God.

Read the passage carefully

The passage does not provide an answer to every political question, and it should not be used to give human government unlimited moral authority. Scripture teaches respect for lawful authority while also making clear that obedience to God is supreme. Believers must consider specific duties carefully within that wider teaching rather than use a single phrase to avoid difficult moral judgment.

Fulfill ordinary responsibilities honestly. Pay what is rightly owed, provide accurate information, and treat officials and neighbors with respect. Where a command conflicts with God's clear Word, seek wise counsel and respond through truthful, lawful means as far as possible. Do not confuse personal inconvenience or disagreement with a genuine demand to sin. Careful discernment is better than constant outrage dressed as courage.

Carry this truth into the day

Christ's answer also presses beyond public affairs into the whole life. God is not owed only a small religious portion after every other interest has been satisfied. We belong to Him as creatures, and those redeemed by Christ have further reason to live gratefully under His authority. Let that allegiance govern speech, money, work, and the treatment of opponents. A political identity is too small to carry the full meaning of Christian discipleship. The Saviour calls His people to honor Him in every responsibility, keeping earthly loyalties within the boundaries set by the Lord whose claim upon us reaches far deeper than any inscription on a coin.

Why the setting matters

Jesus answers a trap about tribute to Caesar by distinguishing what belongs to Caesar from what belongs to God. His response exposes the questioners' attempt while affirming a higher allegiance.
