A few quiet minutes in Scripture

God Did Not Leave Sarah out of the Promise

God Did Not Leave Sarah out of the Promise: an original Genesis 17:15-16 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.”

Genesis 17:15-16 KJV

People can become so occupied with a plan that they overlook the person who must live within it. Sarah had already experienced years of waiting and the sorrow that followed the arrangement involving Hagar. Now the Lord speaks about her specifically. She is included by name in the promise He intends to fulfill.

Read the passage carefully

The promise is particular. God declares that Sarah will bear a son and become the mother of nations and kings. We must not use these words to guarantee pregnancy to every woman who longs for a child. Such a claim would add to Scripture and place a painful burden on people whom we are called to treat with compassion. The account reveals God's faithfulness in the covenant history He is bringing to completion, and Sarah has a real place within that history.

It also reminds us to notice people who are easily reduced to their role in someone else's story. A husband has a wife with her own concerns. A leader works with people whose burdens remain real after the meeting ends. A family member waiting for help is more than the problem others are trying to organize. The Lord's knowledge is personal and complete. Our limited knowledge should make us more willing to listen carefully, not more confident in dismissing what we do not understand.

Carry this truth into the day

Give thoughtful attention to a person you have begun to describe only by the responsibility they carry. Listen without immediately fitting their words into your own plan. Offer practical care and speak truthfully about what God has and has not promised. Christ's compassion does not require us to invent certainty. It calls us to see people with dignity while trusting the Lord whose purposes never depend upon forgetting the person His word addresses.

Why the setting matters

God names Sarah specifically as the mother of the promised son and changes her name. His covenant purpose includes her despite the human impossibility suggested by her age.
