Honor God beyond the Familiar Words

Honor God beyond the Familiar Words: an original Matthew 15:1-9 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

Matthew 15:1-9 KJV

The critics were concerned about a tradition, while Jesus pointed to a command they had weakened through another tradition. The result was serious: religious language could be used to avoid practical care owed to parents. What sounded devoted had become a cover for neglect.

Read the passage carefully

Traditions can serve good purposes when they help us remember and obey Scripture. They become harmful when they claim equal authority or provide a way around what God plainly requires. A familiar religious explanation should therefore be tested by its effect as well as its sound. If it excuses dishonesty, cruelty, or the abandonment of rightful duty, something important has been misunderstood.

Examine the responsibilities nearest you. Service in a public ministry does not automatically cancel obligations at home. A generous contribution does not make an unpaid debt unimportant. Fine words about compassion do not replace attention to the person depending upon your care. Arrange your duties honestly and seek counsel where they conflict, rather than allowing the most visible religious activity to absorb every available resource.

Carry this truth into the day

Christ calls for a heart that honors God in truth. His grace does not leave us trying to earn salvation through better performance, but it does expose the gap between profession and conduct so that we can repent. Let your words be supported by practical faithfulness. If a custom helps you obey, receive it gratefully. If it has become an excuse for avoiding obedience, bring it back under Scripture's authority. The Lord is worthy of more than respectful phrases. He deserves the truthful response of a life willing to let His commands reach the ordinary places where other people experience the consequences of what we claim to believe.

Why the setting matters

Jesus answers criticism about tradition by exposing practices that undermine God's command to honor parents. He warns against outward religious speech disconnected from a heart submitted to God.
