Optimism can rise with a good report and disappear with the next uncertain message. Christian hope has a deeper source. Paul directs believers toward the God of hope and the power of the Holy Ghost rather than toward favorable predictions.
Hope is grounded in God's faithfulness
The surrounding passage recalls God's promises and the inclusion of the Gentiles in His mercy. Paul is not asking people to create a hopeful mood from nothing. The Lord has acted in Christ and shown Himself faithful to His word. Believers have reasons to trust that reach beyond the immediate circumstances.
Joy and peace in believing do not require that every feeling remain settled at all times. Scripture includes lament, grief, and patient waiting. Hope can remain present within those experiences because its foundation is the character and promise of God, not the absence of emotional strain.
The Spirit strengthens the believing heart
Paul speaks of the power of the Holy Ghost. Abounding hope is not an achievement of a naturally cheerful personality. The Lord works in His people as they receive His truth and depend on Him. A quiet, weary believer may be exercising real faith without looking especially confident to an observer.
Stay near the means through which truth is brought to your attention. Read the word, gather with faithful believers where possible, and receive encouragement honestly. Seek appropriate care when sorrow or anxiety becomes difficult to manage. Needing help does not make the promises of God less available to you.
Carry a truthful hope into the day
Do not promise yourself an outcome Scripture has not guaranteed. Instead, remember what the Lord has clearly said about salvation, His presence, and the future of those who belong to Christ. Those truths can sustain faithful action now. Hope grows sturdier when it depends on a faithful God rather than on our ability to make tomorrow sound certain.

Paul speaks of joy, peace, and abounding hope through the Holy Ghost in a section emphasizing Christ's service and God's promises to Jews and Gentiles. Hope rests in God as believers trust Him.

Give hope a sound place to rest
Paul points believers toward the God of hope and the work of the Holy Ghost. Christian hope is therefore deeper than an effort to predict a pleasant week. It grows in relation to the God whose promises can be trusted, even when present circumstances offer little reassurance.
Be careful about what you ask to carry the weight of your confidence. Approval from other people changes. Health and finances can change. God's character does not. Read His promises with attention to their context and receive the encouragement they actually give. Share that encouragement patiently with someone who is struggling. There is no need to pressure a grieving person into cheerful language. Hope can speak gently, acknowledge the burden, and still look toward the faithful Lord whose purpose reaches beyond what we can presently see.
