Integrity Matters When Doing Right Costs Money

Integrity Matters When Doing Right Costs Money: an original Acts 16:16-24 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.”

Acts 16:16-24 KJV

The girl's condition had been profitable to her owners. When that source of gain ended, they responded with anger toward the men through whom deliverance had come. Their complaint exposed a willingness to value income above the welfare of the person being used.

Read the passage carefully

The spiritual event in this passage belongs to the apostolic account and should not become a reason to label every illness or unusual behavior as demonic. Its moral issue is clear: people can resist what is right when wrong arrangements benefit them. A financial loss may reveal loyalties that polite words had kept hidden.

Examine the source of an advantage you receive. Consider whether workers are treated fairly, claims are truthful, and vulnerable people are being pressured or exploited. If a needed correction reduces profit, do not assume the correction must therefore be unreasonable. Seek competent advice, meet lawful responsibilities, and make changes that protect people rather than preserving the arrangement at any cost.

Carry this truth into the day

Christ's authority reaches our financial interests as fully as our religious speech. His grace frees us from treating money as the final judge of a decision. Paul and Silas suffered because others would not accept the cost of doing right. We should be prepared for obedience to have consequences while refusing to make suffering itself a badge of superiority. Act truthfully, seek rightful protection, and continue caring about the people involved. The girl's life mattered more than the income drawn from her distress. That plain moral priority remains important wherever a profitable practice depends upon keeping another person in a condition from which love would seek to help them become free.

Why the setting matters

After a slave girl is delivered from a spirit of divination, her owners lose income and turn against Paul and Silas. Their financial interest drives a public accusation and severe mistreatment.
