Keep Serving when an Open Door Also Brings Opposition
Keep Serving when an Open Door Also Brings Opposition: an original Acts 13:44-49 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.”
Acts 13:44-49 KJV
Interest and resistance appeared in the same setting. A large gathering did not mean every heart welcomed the message, and opposition did not mean the Word had become powerless. The missionaries continued to speak with clarity while recognizing the wider reach of the Lord's purpose.
Read the passage carefully
We should read this historical conflict without turning it into hostility toward Jewish people. The apostles were Jewish, many Jewish hearers believed, and the gospel addresses sinners from every nation. The issue is response to Christ, not a permanent moral judgment upon an ethnic group. Faithful interpretation refuses to make the passage support prejudice.
In your own service, do not let either enthusiasm or criticism become the only measure of faithfulness. Evaluate the message by Scripture and the conduct by truth and love. Respond to genuine concerns, correct mistakes, and avoid escalating conflict simply to appear bold. Where a conversation becomes persistently hostile, it may be wise to move attention toward other opportunities without abandoning compassion for those who resist.
Carry this truth into the day
Christ's gospel is good news worthy of clear witness. We cannot control another person's response, and we should not manipulate it. Speak faithfully, serve honestly, and trust the Lord with the result. A useful opening may still include difficulty, while a hard season may contain quiet fruit you do not immediately recognize. Paul and Barnabas kept the message central rather than allowing opposition to consume the whole ministry. Let that example encourage steady work. There are people ready to hear, duties still needing care, and opportunities that can be missed if every hour is spent answering the loudest critic in the room.
Why the setting matters
A large crowd gathers to hear the word, and opposition intensifies. Paul and Barnabas continue their witness, making clear that the gospel's reach includes the Gentiles.
