Measure Ministry by Faithfulness to the Message
Measure Ministry by Faithfulness to the Message: an original Acts 20:17-24 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church. And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, Serving the LORD with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.”
Acts 20:17-24 KJV
Paul remembered labor, tears, and teaching rather than presenting ministry as a sequence of easy successes. He had spoken publicly and personally, calling people to repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. The message remained central to his account.
Read the passage carefully
Faithfulness is a better measure than appearance alone. A crowded event may be useful, but numbers cannot prove that the gospel was clear or that people were cared for well. A small work may be faithful without being free from needed correction. We should evaluate both teaching and conduct by Scripture instead of allowing visible scale to settle every judgment.
Carry out your responsibility with attention to the people involved. Prepare accurately, speak plainly, and make room for personal care where your role allows it. Avoid hiding difficult truths to preserve approval. Also avoid adding personal harshness and calling it courage. Paul's testimony included tears, reminding us that serious doctrine and tender concern should belong together in faithful service.
Carry this truth into the day
Christ gives the work its purpose and the servant grace to continue. Not every believer has Paul's apostolic calling, but each can seek faithfulness in the duties actually received. Finish the task you have rightly undertaken, communicate honestly when limits require a change, and leave results under the Lord's authority. A useful life is not measured only by how many people know its name. It is shaped by a steady response to the Saviour whose gospel is worth carrying carefully. Let the desire to finish well direct today's ordinary preparation, conversation, and act of service, where long faithfulness is usually built one responsibility at a time.
Why the setting matters
Paul speaks to the Ephesian elders about his service, the gospel he has proclaimed, and the hardship ahead. His concern is to finish the course and ministry received from the Lord Jesus.
