A few quiet minutes in Scripture

Pay the Agreed Price Honestly

Pay the Agreed Price Honestly: an original Genesis 23:16 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.”

Genesis 23:16 KJV

There is nothing unspiritual about paying a bill accurately. Genesis spends considerable attention on Abraham's purchase because the burial place is a real possession obtained through a real agreement. The silver is weighed, the terms are heard, and the transaction is established before witnesses.

Read the passage carefully

Abraham's trust in God's promise did not make ordinary fairness unnecessary. He dealt with the people around him through recognizable terms and fulfilled the price to which he had agreed. The account gives no room for imagining that a spiritual purpose excuses careless treatment of the person supplying a practical need. Sarah's burial mattered deeply, and so did the honesty of the arrangement by which the place was secured.

Our witness is often tested in comparable details. An invoice, a reimbursement, a promised wage, or a shared expense gives truth a concrete form. We may speak warmly about faith while leaving someone else to carry the cost of our delay or incomplete information. When payment is genuinely difficult, honest communication and a responsible plan are better than silence. When a charge is disputed, appropriate channels can be used without misrepresenting the facts. Integrity remains relevant on both sides of the agreement.

Carry this truth into the day

Review the obligation you have accepted. Pay what is properly owed, correct an error, or communicate clearly about the next responsible step. Keep records that tell the truth. Christ's grace should make us more careful about ordinary justice, because the person receiving the payment is someone the Lord has commanded us to treat with respect. A transaction may seem too small to become a devotional subject, yet Scripture includes this one. Faithful living reaches the scale, the receipt, and the promise made across the counter.

Why the setting matters

Abraham weighs out the agreed silver for Ephron in purchasing the burial field. The transaction is conducted publicly and according to the stated amount.
