Responsibility Matters More than the New Position
Responsibility Matters More than the New Position: an original Genesis 41:39-44 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art: Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
Genesis 41:39-44 KJV
Joseph received visible signs of authority, but the work did not end at the ceremony. The approaching famine would require judgment, organization, and sustained effort. A position that looked impressive from the outside carried obligations that would matter to people who never attended the appointment.
Read the passage carefully
We can spend more attention on reaching a role than on becoming faithful within it. A promotion, leadership title, or public invitation may feel like proof that a long struggle has finally been recognized. Gratitude is appropriate, but the next concern should be service. The title exists for the task, and the task affects real people whose welfare must not become secondary to the leader's image.
Learn the responsibility carefully. Listen to those who understand the daily work, establish truthful ways to receive bad news, and resist surrounding yourself only with people who agree. Use authority to clarify duties and protect fair treatment. Admit what you need to learn. A leader does not become weaker by receiving counsel; he becomes dangerous when his desire to appear certain prevents necessary correction.
Carry this truth into the day
Christ taught His followers to serve, and that calling reaches every level of responsibility. If the Lord allows you greater influence, let it increase your care rather than your sense of entitlement. If you serve without a title, the value of your faithfulness remains. Joseph's appointment was significant because of what God would accomplish through the work entrusted to him. The ring and garment could identify his position, but they could not carry out its duties. Whatever role is yours today, give more attention to the people depending upon your conduct than to the recognition attached to your name.
Why the setting matters
Pharaoh appoints Joseph over the work of preparing Egypt for famine. The authority and honor he receives are connected to a serious responsibility for the country's provision.
