Run from What You Should Not Entertain
Run from What You Should Not Entertain: an original Genesis 39:7-12 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her. And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within. And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.”
Genesis 39:7-12 KJV
Joseph understood the trust placed in him, but his refusal reached beyond loyalty to Potiphar. He recognized that the proposed sin was against God. That conviction gave his answer a foundation stronger than the possibility of being caught.
Read the passage carefully
Repeated temptation can wear down a person who keeps trying to negotiate with it. Joseph did not turn the pressure into a private friendship he hoped to manage indefinitely. When the danger became immediate, he left. The abandoned garment later became part of a false accusation, but that painful result did not make escape the wrong decision. Obedience is measured by faithfulness to God, not by whether every observer understands it correctly.
Establish practical boundaries before a situation becomes harder to leave. End the conversation that invites secrecy. Refuse the image, meeting, or exchange that feeds desire you know should not be cultivated. Seek trustworthy accountability and tell the truth about the pressure rather than describing it as harmless attention. If someone is coercing or harassing you, obtain help and use the protections available. Responsibility for that misconduct belongs to the person committing it.
Carry this truth into the day
The Lord's grace provides forgiveness for repentant sinners and strength for present obedience. Do not use either truth as an excuse to remain close to what is drawing you toward sin. Joseph's clear refusal shows that a costly decision can still be the faithful one. Sometimes the wisest response is brief, practical, and immediate. Leave the place, close the door, make the call, and accept the temporary discomfort of a boundary. A reputation may be challenged by someone else's lie, but surrendering your conscience will not make that person a trustworthy keeper of it.
Why the setting matters
Potiphar's wife repeatedly pressures Joseph to sin. He identifies the act as wickedness against God and finally leaves his garment behind as he escapes her grasp.
