Serve Freely because Grace Was Freely Given
Serve Freely because Grace Was Freely Given: an original Matthew 10:5-8 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.”
Matthew 10:5-8 KJV
The disciples were sent with instructions suited to a specific stage of Christ's earthly ministry. Their authority did not originate in personal achievement. They received it from Him, and their conduct was to reflect that received gift.
Read the passage carefully
We should distinguish this mission from later commands extending gospel witness to all nations. We should also avoid claiming that every believer has been given the same miraculous commission described here. The enduring lesson about grace remains clear: what comes from the Lord should not become a means of exploiting people's spiritual need for personal gain.
Christian workers may rightly receive support, as Scripture teaches elsewhere. Support is different from treating access to God's favor as a product for sale. Be wary of claims that a payment guarantees healing, prosperity, forgiveness, or a special answer. The gospel announces a finished work that sinners receive through faith, not a benefit reserved for those who can afford a larger contribution.
Carry this truth into the day
Let generosity shape the service you can give. Share sound teaching, offer practical help, and use your abilities without making every act a calculation of personal return. Maintain responsible boundaries and honest arrangements so that service remains sustainable. Christ's grace does not require careless financial management, but it does challenge a heart that sees every need as an opportunity to profit. Remember what you have received through mercy. The Saviour gave Himself for people who could never repay Him. Our work should carry that same direction of concern, making truth and care available because people need the Lord rather than because their need can be converted into recognition, influence, or income for the one who serves them.
Why the setting matters
Jesus sends the twelve on a particular mission to Israel and gives them authority for the work. Their ministry is to reflect the generosity of what they have received from Him.
