Settle the Matter Truthfully
Settle the Matter Truthfully: an original Genesis 21:25-31 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away. And Abimelech said, I wot not who hath done this thing: neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day. And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant. And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves. And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves? And he said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well. Wherefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they sware both of them.”
Genesis 21:25-31 KJV
Peace can be weakened by a matter everyone hopes will somehow disappear. A boundary remains unclear, an obligation is disputed, or property has been taken, and courtesy begins covering a growing resentment. Abraham spoke about the well. The grievance needed attention if the agreement between the households was to be sound.
Read the passage carefully
The account gives room for Abimelech's explanation that he had not known about the matter. It then records a practical arrangement that established a witness to Abraham's ownership of the well. The details belong to that ancient setting, but the value of clear, truthful agreement is easy to recognize. Neither vague goodwill nor continued accusation would have served as well as addressing the specific issue and making the understanding plain.
Christians should be willing to handle ordinary disputes responsibly. Put important agreements in clear terms, hear the other account, and seek appropriate legal or professional guidance where needed. Faith does not require carelessness with property, money, or obligations. At the same time, the pursuit of a fair settlement should remain governed by truth and proportion. A small dispute need not become a reason to attack the other person's whole character or gather an audience for resentment.
Carry this truth into the day
Consider the unresolved matter within your responsibility. State the facts calmly, identify what would constitute a fair resolution, and use suitable channels to pursue it. Keep records honestly and honor the agreement once made. The Lord values justice in practical life. A truthful settlement can give peace something solid to rest upon. Abraham's concern about a well reminds us that faithful living includes ordinary details, and those details are often best handled through a clear conversation followed by an agreement both parties can understand.
Why the setting matters
Abraham raises the dispute over a well taken by Abimelech's servants, and the two establish a covenant with a clear witness concerning the well. Peace includes addressing the actual grievance.
