Speak Truthfully about Your Work

Speak Truthfully about Your Work: an original Genesis 46:31-34 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father’s house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father’s house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me; And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation? That ye shall say, Thy servants’ trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.”

Genesis 46:31-34 KJV

Joseph did not tell his brothers to invent a more impressive occupation. He prepared them to explain the work they actually did. Their answer would affect the practical arrangement for their families and flocks, so accuracy mattered more than making a fashionable impression.

Read the passage carefully

There is dignity in honest work, including work that receives little social praise. A person does not need an inflated title to make useful labor valuable. Nor should a believer claim skills or experience he does not possess in order to gain an opportunity. A truthful description allows others to make sound decisions and protects people who will depend upon the work being done well.

Prepare for interviews, introductions, and applications with that purpose in view. Explain your abilities clearly, give appropriate examples, and admit where training is still needed. Do not confuse modesty with hiding genuine competence. You can speak confidently about what you have learned while refusing exaggeration. If you are hiring or assigning responsibilities, treat applicants respectfully rather than judging their worth by prestige or polished speech alone.

Carry this truth into the day

Christ's people can serve Him in ordinary occupations. The honesty of the work, the care given to others, and the faithfulness of the worker matter before God. Joseph's brothers needed a place where their real responsibilities could be carried out, and truthful words helped establish it. Let the same principle guide your own decisions. Seek a fit between what is promised and what can actually be delivered. A reputation built through accuracy may grow more slowly than one built through bold claims, but it gives people something dependable upon which to place their trust and allows your conscience to remain clear before the Lord.

Why the setting matters

Joseph prepares his brothers to describe their occupation honestly before Pharaoh. Their work as shepherds will help determine where they settle in Egypt.
