The Lord Heard the Laughter
The Lord Heard the Laughter: an original Genesis 18:10-14 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”
Genesis 18:10-14 KJV
Some disappointments become so familiar that hope begins to feel embarrassing. We learn to speak cautiously, expect little, and protect ourselves from another painful expectation. Sarah heard a promise that reached a place where the ordinary facts of life seemed to have closed the door.
Read the passage carefully
Her laughter was inward, yet the Lord knew it. His answer directed attention to His ability and His appointed time. The promise was not Sarah's invention. God Himself had declared it, and the human impossibility did not limit the One who spoke. We must retain that order. This is confidence in a specific divine promise, not an instruction to assume that every desired outcome will happen if we refuse to acknowledge ordinary limitations.
The Lord's knowledge reaches our private response to His Word as well. We may speak the expected language while inwardly resisting what He has plainly said. His knowledge should make honesty easier. There is no benefit in presenting Him with a version of our faith that hides the real struggle. Christ receives sinners, and believers can bring weakness before Him while continuing to trust the truth He has revealed. A difficult question about circumstances does not have to become a reason to turn away from the Saviour.
Carry this truth into the day
Read the promise in front of you carefully. Learn what God has actually said, to whom He said it, and how it belongs within Scripture. Then believe Him without adding a guarantee He did not give. Speak honestly about disappointment and seek wise support where needed. The Lord who heard Sarah's quiet laughter knows the parts of your heart that never reached an audible sentence. You can depend upon His truth without pretending that trust has already become effortless in every part of your life.
Why the setting matters
Sarah hears the promise of a son and laughs within herself because of her and Abraham's age. The LORD addresses her response and reaffirms His specific promise.
