The Promise beyond the Better View

The Promise beyond the Better View: an original Genesis 13:14-17 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.”

Genesis 13:14-17 KJV

Lot had chosen the well-watered plain, and Abram remained with the land left to him. From an immediate point of view, generosity might have looked expensive. Then the Lord directed Abram's eyes beyond the portion someone else had selected. God's promise had not become smaller because Abram had refused to make the separation a contest.

Read the passage carefully

The words concern a specific covenant. God promises land and descendants to Abram, and the history that follows must be read with that meaning intact. I cannot take the boundaries of that promise and turn them into a guarantee that every unselfish decision will bring me a larger property or a better financial result. The account reveals the faithfulness of the God who keeps His Word, not a technique for becoming wealthy through strategic generosity.

It does help correct the fear that obedience must always secure the best visible advantage. We sometimes cling to a position because we imagine our whole future depends upon winning it. Abram's future depended upon the Lord. The believer's hope today likewise rests in Christ and the promises actually given to His people. We can act truthfully, honor others, and accept a cost without concluding that God has lost the ability to care for us.

Carry this truth into the day

Take the next decision before the Lord with that order settled. Examine the facts, obey clear instruction, and leave room for generosity where wisdom permits. Do not measure God's faithfulness only by whether you received the more attractive view this week. His purposes are larger than the arrangement you can presently see. A good gift may be enjoyed, but it should never be allowed to become the foundation of a confidence that belongs in the Giver.

Why the setting matters

After Lot separates from Abram, the LORD reaffirms His promise concerning the land and Abram's seed. The covenant rests in God's word rather than Abram's ability to secure the most attractive present location.
