A few quiet minutes in Scripture

The Work Between the Instructions

The Work Between the Instructions: an original Genesis 6:22 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.”

Genesis 6:22 KJV

A completed project can be described in one sentence even when it required a long stretch of ordinary labor. Genesis says that Noah did according to all God commanded him. Behind that statement stood the work of building, preparing, and continuing. Obedience had to reach beyond agreeing that the instructions were good.

Read the passage carefully

Noah did not design his own way of escaping judgment and ask God to bless it. He received a command and followed it. Hebrews 11 later identifies his response as an act of faith. Faith took God's warning seriously before the promised event was visible. The work did not replace trust; it expressed trust in the One who had spoken. Noah's circumstances were unique, so we should not turn every personal project into a new ark. The principle of believing God enough to obey Him is plain.

My own obedience is often tested in the space between intention and completion. I may agree that restitution is necessary while postponing the payment. I may admit that a habit is harmful while leaving every opportunity for it untouched. A good intention has not completed the responsibility. Faithfulness becomes visible when the instruction begins to govern what I actually do.

Carry this truth into the day

Choose the next unfinished duty that Scripture has made clear. Break it into a practical step you can carry out today. If you need assistance, ask for it without using the need as an excuse to stop. Some work is slow, and a faithful beginning may look unimpressive. Continue according to the light God has given. One day of steady obedience is more useful than another elaborate explanation of what you have been meaning to do.

Why the setting matters

After God gives instructions concerning the ark, Scripture records Noah's obedience. The short statement summarizes substantial work carried out according to God's command.
