Watchfulness Includes Faithful Daily Work
Watchfulness Includes Faithful Daily Work: an original Matthew 24:42-47 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.
“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.”
Matthew 24:42-47 KJV
The servant's task was not to calculate the master's arrival with impressive confidence. It was to provide what had been entrusted to him at the proper time. Jesus joins watchfulness to ordinary faithfulness rather than allowing expectation to become an excuse for neglected duty.
Read the passage carefully
The Lord's return is a real hope, but Scripture does not authorize date-setting. Predictions that claim to know what God has not revealed can produce fear, disappointment, and irresponsible choices. Receive the promise Christ has given and respect the limits He has placed upon our knowledge. Certainty about His coming does not require certainty about a timetable He has withheld.
Live ready through the work already assigned. Care for your family, serve your church, act honestly in employment, and speak the gospel faithfully. Make reasonable plans without treating the future as entirely yours to control. If an expectation of Christ's return leads you to abandon people who depend upon you, reconsider whether that response agrees with the servant He commends in this passage.
Carry this truth into the day
The believer's hope is grounded in the risen Saviour, not in the accuracy of a current prediction. His grace gives reason for both joyful expectation and steady labor. Keep short accounts with sin, seek reconciliation where possible, and use the time available for what will matter before Him. A faithful day may contain many ordinary tasks that no one would describe as dramatic preparation. Yet the Lord values the servant found doing the work entrusted to him. Readiness is not only a feeling about the future. It is a present life increasingly ordered around the authority and promised return of the Master we are waiting to see.
Why the setting matters
Jesus instructs His disciples to watch for His coming and describes a faithful servant carrying out the master's assigned responsibility. Readiness is expressed through dependable conduct during the wait.
