Work Before the Thorns

Work Before the Thorns: an original Genesis 2:15 KJV devotional with biblical context and practical application.

“And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.”

Genesis 2:15 KJV

Some days the word work sounds like another word for trouble. A job runs late, the tools will not cooperate, and a task that looked small takes the entire afternoon. Genesis helps me separate the goodness of useful work from the frustration that now accompanies it. Adam was given a responsibility in the garden before the fall. Having something worthwhile to do was part of God's good arrangement.

Read the passage carefully

The garden belonged to God, and Adam was placed there to tend it. He did not create the ground, invent the plants, or become their final owner. He worked as someone entrusted with what another had provided. That is a useful way to approach employment, a household, volunteer service, or the care of a family member. The particular responsibility may change, but stewardship keeps ability and opportunity connected to accountability. I am answerable for how I handle what has been placed within my care.

The fall brought thorns, sweat, and sorrow into human labor. We should be honest about that burden. Faithfulness at work does not guarantee an easy employer, a comfortable income, or a project without setbacks. It does give a reason to work honestly when nobody is watching. A task can honor the Lord even when it receives little attention. The value of serving Him cannot be measured only by the visibility of the assignment.

Carry this truth into the day

Take one responsibility that has become familiar enough to invite carelessness. Complete it with the attention you would want someone else to give it if the consequences fell on your family. Put away the borrowed tool. Finish the record accurately. Keep the promise that looked small when you made it. Rest when rest is needed, and return without making idleness your goal. Useful work was present before the thorns. Remembering that can restore purpose to a task that frustration has made difficult to appreciate.

Why the setting matters

God places Adam in the garden to dress it and keep it before sin enters the world. Work is part of man's original responsibility; the painful toil of the curse follows later.
