Day 1 – Ruth 4:17 Ruth 4:22
The first place we come to in our study of the life of David is the book of Ruth. David is mentioned in Ruth 2 times.
Ruth 4:17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
Ruth 4:22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
The book of Ruth ended with the marriage of Boaz and Ruth, and the Genealogy of David.
The beginning of verse 17 reminds me of getting witnesses for a marriage certificate. It was a custom in those days to have a witness in the naming of your child.
It states that women gave it a name. My mother named me. I told her, why in the world did you name me Rudy. I got picked on so much in school for my name. The Cosby show was very popular around the 80's and Rudy Huxtable was the famous female character in the show, boy did I get made fun of. Thank you IHOP for name your meal "rooty tooty fresh and fruity." That one never got old, yeah it did.
Who named you?
At the end of verse 17 and in verse 22 we find the name David proceeded by His Father and Grandfather. This would be the last and only time the Bible mentions Jesse as "the father of David".
Why is it written this way?
