Psalm 78:70-72

Psalm 78 is a great portion of scripture to study before we move on to 1 Samuel 17. God inspired Asaph to record part of David’s history in song.

"He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:" Psalm 78:70

He chose David, How incredible of a statement to find that God chose David. There are many players on a football team, but not all of them play. God may have saved me, but that doesn't mean He is using me. I have heard it preached many times, "God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called."

"From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance." Psalm 78:71

David was a type of Christ as a shepherd; as he kept his father's sheep, so Christ keeps those that the Father has given him:

"My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand." John 10:29

David kept his flock with great care and courage, and in safety, so does the Lord Jesus Christ keep His flock (us) in safety, and preserves us from Satan, the roaring lion, and from grievous wolves that enter in among us, and every beast of prey that would devour us.

"So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands." Psalm 78:72

This verse is speaking about David's reign to come. We haven't got there yet, but I see his willingness to care for the people as carefully as he cared for his sheep.
